Security cameras and alarms in Remuera
Good security is quiet and well placed. Our electricians install alarm systems, CCTV cameras and security lighting for Remuera homes and businesses, with the wiring hidden and the cameras pointed where they should be.

Light, alarm, camera
Security works best in layers. Light comes first: a dark side path or a back door hidden by planting invites someone in, while a sensor light that comes on as they arrive sends them on their way. An alarm comes next, with sensors on doors and in the rooms that matter and a siren that makes itself heard. Cameras come last, to show who came and when, and to let you check on the house from your phone while you are away.
The Privacy Commissioner makes the same point from the other direction, suggesting lights and alarms are worth considering before cameras. Our outdoor lighting service covers sensor lights over doors, along driveways and down the side of the house.
What we install
Cameras and the neighbours
Many Remuera properties now share boundaries that were once inside one large garden, so a camera on one house can easily look straight into the next. The Privacy Commissioner's guidance on CCTV at home says a person filming as an individual is not usually covered by the Privacy Act unless what they do is highly offensive to a reasonable person, and it would not usually treat images that could be seen from the street that way. Its tips are practical: talk to your neighbours before you put a camera up, put up signs saying cameras are in place, do not point a camera directly at a neighbour's property, doors or windows, and do not record all the time from every angle or keep footage longer than you need.
Those tips are a good guide to placement: aim each camera at your gate, drive, doors and paths, and check its view on screen before the bracket is tightened, so that it shows your property and not the house next door.
Long driveways, gates and outbuildings
A house set well back behind walls, hedges and big trees is private, which also means nobody on the street sees what happens at its door. On larger sections the useful places for a camera are often the gate, a point along the drive, the front door and the side paths, with a garage or studio covered by a camera of its own. Running data cable to each one is more work than fitting wireless cameras, but a wired camera keeps working when the signal does not reach the bottom of the garden.
The same approach suits shops and offices, where a recorder kept out of reach and an alarm covering every entrance matter as much as the cameras. If the switchboard is too full to take the extra circuits, our page on switchboard upgrades explains what is involved.
Security questions
Wired or wireless cameras?
Wired cameras are more reliable, because they take power and data through one cable and do not depend on a wireless signal or a battery. Wireless cameras suit a spot that cable cannot easily reach.
Can I watch my cameras and alarm from my phone?
Yes. Most current systems give you live view, recordings and alarm alerts in an app.
Am I allowed to film the street outside my house?
The Privacy Commissioner says it would not usually treat images that could be seen from the street as highly offensive, but it asks people not to point cameras directly at a neighbour's property, doors or windows. Cameras are best aimed at your own property.
Do you install alarms and cameras for shops and offices?
Yes. Our registered electricians work on commercial premises as well as homes.
Can security lights be linked to the cameras?
Yes. Sensor lights can come on as a camera picks up movement, which gives a clearer picture at night as well as warning off the visitor.
